How Digital Technology has Transformed the Dental X-ray Machine

X-rays have long been a valuable diagnostic tool. However, sophisticated digital imaging technology is fast replacing the conventional dental X-ray machine. An unknown form of radiation discovered and labelled “X” by Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen in 1895 with the ability to penetrate most materials, aroused immediate interest in many fields. It also earned him a Nobel prize in physics.

By the following year, physicians began using his discovery to view their patient’s skeletal structure, lungs and other vital organs. However, despite success in medical diagnostics, machines suitable for dentists only became available during the 1920s, and dental practitioners did not widely apply this revolutionary new technology until about 30 years later.

Although X-ray performance has improved, the equipment is often bulky and interpreting its greyscale negative images requires a trained eye and extensive experience. However, digital technology has enabled more compact machines with improved imaging to meet dentists’ and patients’ needs more thoroughly. The following are some examples of advanced imaging equipment available from Hague Dental Supplies:

The Intraoral X-Ray Machine

Extraoral radiographs remain valuable for providing a panoramic view for observing tooth development, impacted teeth and tumours, or a cephalometric view when planning orthodontic treatments. However, intraoral bitewing radiography is now considered the better option to locate hard-to-find decay and cavities between the bicuspid and back teeth. Also, an intraoral periapical X-ray offers the dentist a full-length view of an entire tooth from root to crown. In addition, a palatal view of the upper or lower jaw can display a complete arch of teeth, which is invaluable for checking tooth development and placement in children. You can view the Belmont, Durr and other branded products at a designated Hague Dental Supplies showroom.

Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) System

Sophisticated computing and data processing has transported the dental X-ray machine to the next level. These units can be rotated around the patient to capture sequential images with a cone-shaped beam. Once the scanning is complete, this hi-tech X-ray imaging system can construct a three-dimensional anatomical view displaying detailed features of the mouth, jaw, neck, ear, nose and throat from the data obtained. You can also view Vatech, Acteon and Planmeca CBCT imaging systems at one of our showrooms.

Intraoral Scanning Equipment

Laser scanning is a more precise alternative to the conventional impressions required when performing dental restorations, such as crowns, implants, veneers and bridges. The procedure employs a hand-held device that can complete a scan in around 2 minutes to generate a 3D digital image that the dentist and patient can view on a nearby monitor. The image data can be processed by CAD/CAM software and instruct an automated milling machine or 3D printer to create restorations and aligners at the chairside, eliminating delays and reducing the need for multiple appointments.
